Interview with Jersey United Alumna, Elena Wolfe

Jersey United talked with Elena Wolfe, an alumna, to discuss how playing for Jersey United enabled her to achieve success at the next level in her career. It also connected her with Soccer Without Borders, a non-profit organization providing soccer programs to underprivileged youth around the world.

Q.     What years did you play for Jersey United?
A.      I started playing for JU late in my career. I played on the team from 2011-2013 under Dominic and also played in the Adult Summer League.

Q.     What position did you play when you played for JU?
A.      I played Center Midfield.

Q.     Where do you go to school now?
A.      I currently attend the Rochester Institute of Technology and I am a third year.

Q.     Do you play soccer at your college? If so, what position?
A.      I played freshman and some of sophomore year at center midfield before I got injured with an ACL injury. But I came back to play again this year as a junior and was able to redshirt my sophomore year so I still have two years of eligibility.

Q.     How did you get involved with Soccer without Borders?
A.      My college team played at SUNY Cortland and that game was a fundraiser where the proceeds went to Soccer Without Borders. My coach sent us the links about opportunities on getting involved.

Q.     What is their main goal or objective?
A.      Their main goal is to provide underprivileged youth with skills to overcome the adversity they may face using soccer training and education.

Q.     What is the program you are a part of under Soccer without Borders?
A.      I will be spending 2 weeks in January at a homestay in Nicaragua. With a team of about 20 volunteers and SWB staff, we will host a soccer camp just for around 200 girls. In the mornings, we will teach them soccer techniques, host scrimmages, etc. In the afternoons, we will focus on teambuilding and other off-the-field activities.

Q.     Why did you decide to get involved with this organization?
A.      I wanted to volunteer for a while but I couldn’t find the right opportunity. This fell into my lap and I thought it was perfect because I can pass along the tools that gave me my success.

Q.     How do you feel JU contributed to your success?
A.      Through JU, we went to bigger tournaments and showcases where I received exposure I would not have received otherwise. I developed technical skills at a fast-pace. All of these factors contributed to my recruitment by RIT.

Q.     If you could give one piece of advice to current JU players, what would it be?
A.      My advice would be to stay focused and do as much work as you can on your own because that’s when you get better. If playing soccer at the collegiate level is your goal, start reaching out to coaches and working on it sooner rather than later because it’ll only help in your recruiting process.
